Spin-orbital entanglement in iridium oxides

  • microscopic description of the quantum magnetism of layered honeycomb iridates such as Na2IrO3
  • strong spin-orbital entanglement translates the directional nature of d-orbitals into a bond-selective anisotropy of magnetic interactions providing a ground for exotic magnetic phases including a quantum spin liquid
  • motivated by a possibility to realize Kitaev model suggested for topological quantum computing in iridium based materials
