Pilot deposition experiments of X2BC system in Japan

Scientists from the Deposition of Thin Films and Nanostructures research group of the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology traveled to Japan to conduct pilot experiments. Nb2BC-based layers could offer an attractive combination of mechanical properties: hardness and flexibility.

Physics at the Festival of Science 2023

The Festival of Science 2023 was held at the Brno Exhibition Centre from Friday 8 September to Sunday 10 September 2023. Around 10,000 visitors had the opportunity to peek into the attractive world of science, technology, and history. All three physics department of Masaryk University presented their program to the visitors. The event was organized by the Brno Observatory and Planetarium with the support of the Statutory City of Brno and the South Moravian Region.

New numerical models for the design of ductile hard layers

Dr. Pavel Ondračka from the Department of Physics and Technology is developing new models for simulations of the structure and properties of thin films. Thanks to a MŠMT MSCA project, he went and now collaborates with colleagues at the University of Leoben in Austria. Using his models for the amorphous material tungsten-boron-carbon (W-B-C), it will be possible to predict the mechanical properties of this material, understand its behavior, and find the most suitable composition for hard protective layer applications.

The new name of DPE from 1 September 2023

From 1 September 2023, the name of the Department of Physical Electronics of the Faculty of Science will change. The new Czech name is "Ústav fyziky a technologií plazmatu" (abbreviation ÚFTP). The English equivalent is "Department of Plasma Physics and Technology" (abbreviation DPPT).

The Smoking Gun for Supermassive Binaries in Active Galactic Nuclei

An international research team led by Silke Britzen from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany, has investigated blazars, accreting supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies. An important member of the team was astrophysicist Michal Zajaček from the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University. Their findings are presented in the Astrophysical Journal.

Plasma as a tool to improve the quality of UV digital printing

Digital printing is now a widely available technology. However, the printed materials' size and variety still present a challenge for printers. Not all glass, polymer and Dibond boards, canvases, etc., are suitable for printing. However, atmospheric plasma treatments can also cope with the adhesion of these different materials for UV digital printing.

Flame retardant research

Scientists from the Applied Plasmochemistry Research Group of the Institute of Applied Plasmochemistry are also involved in purely chemical experiments. One such project is the project of Dr. Alberti, Dr. Pijáková, and Dr. Prokeš focused on research and preparation of additives for epoxy resins, which act as flame retardants.

New diagnostics device RFEA

Since mid-July, our scientists have acquired a new device that extends the current capabilities in process diagnostics of thin film deposition. The RFEA (Retarding Field Energy Analyser) enables the measurement of incident ions with high time resolution, a crucial parameter for thin film deposition using magnetron sputtering.

MU astrophysicists inaugurate largest telescope in Moravia

AZ 800, a new university telescope, will be used mainly for teaching students of astrophysics and for astronomical observations. It is a joint project of the town of Ždánice and the Department of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics of the MU Faculty of Science.

Corentin Bajon studies reaction mechanisms of dielectric barrier discharges at DPE

French Ph.D. student Corentin Bajon has arrived at the Department of Physical Electronics for the second time within the MOBILITY project. His research focuses on dielectric barrier discharges in carbon dioxide atmosphere and understanding various reaction mechanisms of said discharge.

Sensorics for the 21st Century project is launched

From March 2023, a new project Sensorics for the 21st Century is launched. Scientists from Prof. Petr Vašina's research group Deposition of Thin Films and Nanostructures and CEPLANT centre will work on this project until June 2026. They will develop new sensors for industrial applications with co-investigators of the MATCA National Centre of Competence.

Kryštof Mrózek is one of the winners of this year's competition Brno PhD. Talent. He will receive a stipend supporting his scientific research in the next three years. His computer simulations for new satellite propulsion systems destined for the very low orbit will be vital for practical testing and the future of new propulsion systems.
