Project on functionalized fiber spectroscopy with HAWK Göttingen is halfway through

Scientists from the Plasma Nanotechnologies and Bioapplications research group at the DPPT and CEPLANT center investigate new possibilities for sample analysis using LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy). They traveled again to Göttingen, Germany, to further measure LIBS and to discuss plans for future work. The MOBILITY projects rely on reciprocal visits between international partners and their research centers.

Dr. Čech's research stay at the University of Innsbruck, Austria

Dr. Jan Čech from the Applied Plasmochemistry research group at the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology went on a month-long research stay at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. The visit was devoted to diagnostics of the new CaviPlasma technology.

Student physics lectures 2023

The last weekend in October belonged to the Student Physics Seminar 2023. The seminar aims to transfer experiences between students of different years. First-year students learned how things work in physics studies at MU, how to choose a bachelor thesis, what courses to take, or how to study abroad. The involvement of junior students in the community of senior physics students is the basis of a friendly atmosphere between students in all three physics departments.

ESCAMPIG 1^st Announcement is here! The ESCAMPIG (Europhysics Conference on Atomic and Molecular Physics and Ionized Gases) is a biennial conference of EPS (European Physical Society). Conference topics are basic and applied plasma research. It will be held in Brno for the first time in Czechia on 9-13 July 2024.

9-13 July 2024 will belong to the ESCAMPIG (Europhysics Conference on Atomic and Molecular Physics and Ionized Gases). The ESCAMPIG 2024 is a biennial conference of EPS (European Physical Society). Conference topics are basic and applied plasma research. The event is organized by the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology of Masaryk University, the CEPLANT Center, and the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists.

New decontamination chamber

Scientists from the Plasma Nanotechnologies and Bioapplications research group of the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology have developed a new prototype of a decontamination chamber. Dr. Zlata Kelar Tučeková and her team worked on this technology for two years.

New project: Advanced optics for the application of ultrashort laser pulses in DUV, VIS and NIR

The Research Group Optics of Thin Films and Solid Surfaces is now working on the project Advanced Optics for Applications of Ultrashort Laser Pulses in the DUV, VIS and NIR Wave Region (reg. no. CZ.01.01.01/01/22_002/0000677) funded by the Operational Programme Technology and Applications for Competitiveness.

The 2024 JUNIOR STAR grant has been awarded to astrophysicist Michal Zajaček

This year, the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic will support 17 projects as part of the JUNIOR STAR challenge, one of which will go to astrophysicists at Masaryk University. The young researcher being supported is Dr. Michal Zajaček, who has received funding for his project ‘Stars in Galactic Nuclei: Interrelation with Massive Black Holes’.

Mateusz Wnukowski studies plasma gas conversion using laser diagnostics

Plasma diagnostics using TALIF can lead to a better understating of plasma conversion of fuel gases. Dr. Mateusz Wnukowski from Wroclaw came to the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology to learn about laser diagnostics in more detail. His research aims to make more effective and environmentally friendly alternatives to the presently used technologies for fuel conversion.

2023 MU prorector's awards for exceptional results during postgraduate studies

Prof. Šárka Pospíšilová, a prorector for research and doctoral studies, gave awards to new MU absolvents for exceptional results during their postgraduate studies. In the physics field, two fresh graduates from the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology were awarded: Dr. Stanislava Debnárová and Dr. Michael Kroker.

Looking back at Researcher's Night 2023

Mystery was the theme of this year's Night of Scientists, held on 6 October. Around 1,500 visitors came to the premises. Animators from the Institute of Plasma Physics and Technology and the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics offered an exciting program about physics for all ages.

Scientists have observed the Galactic Center for the first time thanks to the JWST

An international team of scientists, including astrophysicist Michal Zajaček from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University, has identified a young stellar cluster in the immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole Sgr A* at the center of our Galaxy. Scientists were surprised by the age of observed objects and for the first time published the spectrum of the center of our galaxy taken by the James Webb Space Telescope.

Josja Van Bever, a PhD student from Ghent University, has shortly joined the Deposition of Thin Films and Nanostructures research group at the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology. He studies the double hysteresis behavior of the reactive magnetron sputtering process.

QUVIK will become the first Czech space telescope Astrophysicists from Masaryk University lead the scientific part of the project.

Green light has been given to QUVIK (Quick Ultra-Violet Kilonovae Surveyor), which will become the first Czech space telescope. The scientific part of the project will be managed by astrophysicists from Masaryk University. Experts from the Czech Ministry of Transport and the European Space Agency (ESA) selected two out of seven Czech space projects proposed, one of which was QUVIK, a space telescope optimised for the ultraviolet part of the spectrum, which will focus on sources of gravitational waves that arise from collisions of black holes and neutron stars. The project will be led by the Czech Aerospace Research Centre (VZLÚ).
