Areej Fatima is new Brno Ph.D. Talent

Brno Ph.D. Talent Project announced its new winners. From physics at Masaryk University, Areej Fatima was successful in Plasma Physics and Marianna Dafčíková in Astrophysics. Areej works under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Tomáš Homola at the Plasma Nanotechnologies and Bioapplications research group. In her project, she will focus on developing a g-C3N4-based fabric for photocatalysis in wastewater treatment.

First binary star discovered near giant black hole at the centre of our Galaxy

Scientists have discovered the unique binary star D9 in close proximity to the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* at the centre of the Milky Way, providing new insights into star formation and their survival in extreme conditions.

The significant discovery, published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications, was co-authored by Michal Zajaček from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University.

The new PLATOSpec spectrograph in Chile developed with contributions from scientists at the MU Faculty of Science

The Department of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, played a pivotal role in the PLATOSpec project, which is dedicated to advancing the search for Earth-like exoplanets. This collaboration will provide students across all levels of astrophysics studies at Masaryk University with a unique opportunity to work with data from this state-of-the-art instrument for their final theses, thereby deepening their involvement in world-class research.

MUNI Scientist Award 2024

MUNI Grant Agency handed out rewards for outstanding scientists, this year also in physics, specifically biophysics. Prof. Robert Vácha, Dr. Silvie Trantírková and Assoc. Prof. Lukáš Trantírek from the Department of Condensed Matter Physics and CEITEC were awarded for the article published in the journal Nature Communications.

Matej Fekete investigates preparation and properties of TiAlON protective thin films

Dr. Matej Fekete's new project aims to identify the impact of deposition parameters on plasma properties and correlate them with the properties of prepared TiAlON protective thin films that could withstand higher loads than current protective thin films. In the next thirty months, he will deal with their development from deposition and process diagnostics to thin film analysis and implementation in the industry.

Installation of the DCSBD Plasma Device at Fraunhofer Institute in Potsdam

The installation of the DCSBD plasma device at the Fraunhofer Institute in Potsdam, Germany, is completed. The decision to reinstall the device was based on the positive outcomes from their earlier research. This collaboration is part of the R2R Net Consortium and was supported by Roplass, a spin-off from Masaryk University. The process was coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dušan Kováčik, PhD. and Stefan Kröpke, with the installation handled by researchers Dr. Jakub Kelar and Roman Přibyl.

Anna Podmanická from the Jur Hronec highschool in Bratislava won several awards at this year's AMAVET 2024 Science and Technology Festival. She worked on her project with František Zažímal at the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology.

Unveiling the Secrets of Galaxies: International Conference in Brno Attracted Top Astronomers

Brno became the center of the global astronomical community thanks to the international conference Galaxies at Crossroads (original title GALAXIES AT CROSSROADS: OUTFLOWS AND IMF IN THE VLT/ELT/ALMA/JWST ERA). The workshop took place from September 16 to 20, 2024, and was one of the few officially approved workshops by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). It was organized by Tereza Jeřábková from ESO, who will be joining the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in February 2025, thanks to her MUNI Award in Science and Humanities (MASH).

Looking back at Researcher's Night 2024

Transformation was the theme of this year's Night of Scientists, held on 27 September. Around 1,200 visitors came to the premises even in the bad weather. Animators from all three physics departments offered an exciting program about physics for all ages.

Physics at the Festival of Science 2024

The Festival of Science 2024 was held at the Brno Exhibition Centre from Friday 6 September to Sunday 8 September 2024. Around 10,000 visitors had the opportunity to peek into the attractive world of science, technology, and history. All three physics department of Masaryk University presented their program to the visitors. The event was organized by the Brno Observatory and Planetarium with the support of the Statutory City of Brno and the South Moravian Region.
