Thanka Rajan – Innovations in Thin Films for Biomedical and Environmental Applications

Advancements in thin film technology have significantly impacted both biomedical and environmental fields by improving material performance, functionality, and sustainability. This presentation explores the design, fabrication, and application of thin film metallic glasses (TFMGs) and metal oxide nanocomposites for diverse biomedical and photocatalytic uses.

In biomedical applications, TFMGs based on Zr-, Ti-, and degradable Mg-alloys exhibit superior mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, hemocompatibility, and bioactivity, making them promising candidates for orthopedic implants and surgical tools. Surface modification strategies enhance biocompatibility, reduce bacterial adhesion, and promote osteointegration.

In the environmental domain, metal oxide-based nanocomposite thin films, including Ta–Nb–O and carbon-doped photocatalysts, demonstrate excellent solar-driven photocatalytic activity for dye degradation and water purification. Additionally, nanoparticle-functionalized textiles show antibacterial and self-cleaning properties suitable for biomedical fabrics.

Collectively, these innovations highlight the role of engineered thin films in advancing healthcare materials and sustainable environmental technologies.
